Vermiculite as an Adsorbent Carrier Material in Aromatherapy
The Role of Large-Granule Vermiculite as an Adsorbent Carrier Material in Aromatherapy
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring layered silicate mineral. When heated to high temperatures,
it expands dramatically in volume, forming the loose, porous "expanded vermiculite." Thanks
to its dual characteristics of porous adsorption and slow release, large-granule vermiculite can
serve as an ideal carrier substrate for essential oils and fragrances. Among aromatherapy diffuser
stones available overseas, materials such as diatomite, lava rock, and gypsum are more common,
but vermiculite is fully capable of serving as an equivalent alternative carrier from a technical
standpoint, with its own distinctive performance advantages.
1. Adsorbing and Storing Essential Oils and Fragrances
Through capillary action and surface adsorption, the layered porous structure of
vermiculite draws essential oils and fragrance liquids into its internal pores, acting as a "storage" medium.
This effectively prevents the liquid from spilling or evaporating too quickly, allowing the fragrance
to be retained stably.
2. Slow-Release Diffusion and Controlled Release
The absorbed essential oils are locked within the pores and then gradually evaporate into the air through
micropores, delivering a continuous and even scent release that significantly extends the fragrance's
longevity. This mechanism is consistent with the "adsorption–slow release" principle of carriers such
as activated carbon and mesoporous silica — multiple overseas studies have confirmed that porous
minerals possess the dual functions of adsorption and slow release for volatile organic compounds.
3. Increasing the Volatile Contact Surface Area
The gaps between large granules, together with the pores within the granules themselves, form a larger
gas–liquid contact interface, which facilitates the diffusion of fragrance molecules into the air and improves
scent-diffusion efficiency.
4. Providing Stable Physical Support and a Shaping Carrier
Large-granule vermiculite can be used as a filling substrate inside aroma-diffusion containers (such
as aromatherapy bottles, sachets, and diffuser trays), both carrying the essential oil and acting as a
decorative or shaping filler, combining aesthetic and functional value.
5. Safe, Eco-Friendly, and Preserving the Essential Oil's Composition
Vermiculite is chemically stable, non-toxic, and non-flammable, and does not react chemically with essential
oils, allowing the original aromatic components of the essential oil to be preserved relatively intact. Compared
with heat-based diffusion, which may degrade the components, vermiculite's cold-diffusion approach is
gentler and more natural.
Summary: With its five key advantages — porous adsorption, slow-release fragrance control, expanded evaporation
surface, physical support, and safety/eco-friendliness — large-granule vermiculite is a natural substrate adsorbent
material that combines practicality and cost-effectiveness in the aromatherapy and fragrance field.
